Target department stores has given Shelter Me a huge vote of confidence by choosing it as one of its six Bookmarked picks of the year. It’s an unexpected honor for me because it puts my little old novel in the company of some really wonderful, well-written books, like A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Loving Frank, and Three Cups of Tea. One of the greatest perks of publishing is that people you haven’t been in touch with in years see the book in a place like Target or their local bookstore and find a way to check back in. It’s been a huge delight to be “found” by old college friends and others from my younger, wilder days. (Not that my days aren’t wild anymore—but as any parent can say, it’s a distinctly different flavor of wild.)
One more thing. My friend Karen Kiefer and I came up with an idea for readers who want to test drive the powers of Pology Cake. Check out the details of Baking Amends in the BOOK section of this website, as well as on the Spread the Bread website at www.spreadthebread.org.
I just reread Shelter Me. I love this book for so many reasons… the power of forgiveness, the reminder to be a gift to others, the reminder not to take loved ones for granted…
You are such a talented writer! I also read Deep Down True, and loved it. (But loved Shelter Me more!)
Thank you!
Thank you so much for bringing Janie’s life right off the page! I started and finished the book this weekend. I brought it to the hair salon and to my 10 year old son’s pick-up from baseball practice (I got there early just so I could read a little more). It was amazing that someone else’s words, your words, could so vividly tell a story so similar to mine. I related to the complexity, the vulnerability, the passion and the real-life value of the fact that someone else could feel in its entirety the array of emotions that you have so succesfully managed to breath life into with every realtionship described “Shelter Me”. The book is a prayer for every finger that turns one of the pages and for those whose lives are touched by the magnificent uplift and hopefulness that lies between the covers of the book. THANK YOU!
I just finished reading “Shelter Me.” What a fabulous book! It made me laugh and cry. The characters came to life for me, all of them I felt I knew personally. I didn’t want it to end. I read a book a week (I love reading!) I usually pass my books on to fellow readers telling them they can continue to pass them along. This is one book I am telling my friends to get and read, because I am keeping it in my library to visit again and again. Thank you, Ms. Fay, for a wonderful week of losing myself in Janie’s world. Please keep writing!!
I love this book. I laughed, I cried, I felt connected to the characters. What a beautiful book.
I’ve recommended it to several friends and to a few book clubs.
I am currently in middle of reading this story (really almost done) and it is so much like my own life and how I have had similar loss and had to come out of the fog of heartbreak, I am finding myself connecting more and more with the characters of the book. I have similar friends with the same characteristics, that I find this book so amusing and I see a lot of myself as Janie. Thank you for a book that can help out with the grief process that one goes through after such a life changing event. Even if it has been over 10 years since I was new to the grief of losing my precious loved one.
I loved this book, The story and characters were wonderful. Thanks for a great book.
Thank you for giving me a book which was a delight to read! This book was selected by my book club and I can’t wait to discuss it tomorrow night when we next meet. The characters and story were so real, that as much as I wanted to see what would happen, I did not want the book to end. It made me realize again, that a person’s life contains so much more than we may think. Everyone truly has their own story to tell. Can’t wait to read your next book!
I picked up this book at Target on Friday evening, and finished it by Sunday! Wow- it is amazing and had so much relevance . I am challenged to truly forgive others and to share my gifts with others, as well as appreciate those who are in my life. I am planning to re-read the book, as I am sure there are things I missed the first time. I have an 11 year-old daughter, so I can’t wait for your next book!!!!!
